about

Viking Fell derives its name from an old legend about the nine worlds of Norse mythology, in particular, Jötunheimr is a land where giants live and rule. Viking Fell refers to the notion that, even if past attempts have only led to humiliation and defeat, change is possible.

Viking fell was formed in the ashes of Fractal Pattern, The Wolf Note, Rough Music, and In Irons. From 2006-8 In Irons was an Edmonton three piece comprised of Matthew Kaprowy (Bass), Garret Kruger (Drums), and Nathan Setterlund (Guitar and Vocals).

After releasing an EP and playing numerous shows in Edmonton and across the prairies In Irons decided to dismantle and reform as a new incarnation. In 2009 Nathan and Matthew decided to forge ahead, lose the drummer, and focus on a new hybrid blend of electric guitar, bass and Ableton Live based electronics and synthetic sounds.

Shortly after forming Viking Fell, Bradley Amundson, of Team Building joined with Setterlund and Kaprowy to lend his somber yet graceful vocals and shimmering guitar styling’s to the electro-analogue soundscapes being created.

Viking Fell has worked hard to experiment with their sound, adding keyboard and vocalist Matthew Trepanier for a period in 2011. In addition Viking Fell have played a number of live shows with various singers, vocalists and MC’s fronting. On occasion, Viking Fell have merged with Louis Williams and Curtis Tolonen, of short lived local project Gab’n, to create exciting temporary incarnations.

Viking Fell embodies a passion for creative experimentation that has led to a continued push for further refining the Viking Fell sound. Midi and Blue Tooth Controllers as well as Ableton Live have all played a part in the evolution of one of the most experimental musical outfits in Edmonton. Eventually Viking Fell realized that without a computing science degree between the 3 of them, they would never fully replace the sound of a live Drummer.

Nathan met Brett Henry, drummer and percussionist extraordinaire while moonlighting as a bass player in local 80’s inspired pop-outfit MASS CHOIR and their audio-techno genius and front man Matthew Skopyk.

Since 2009 Viking Fell have played dozens of shows locally, regionally and have made their way as far as Winnipeg to dazzle audiences with what can only be described as technical, operatic, progressive, experimental post-rock, otherwise known as beyond simple categorization. If Frank Zappa means anything to you, you get the idea.

Viking Fell have released two E.P.s
2009’s Curve Cutting the Meridians (Recorded by Shout Out’s Nik Kozub) &
2013’s Pembina (Recorded in a cabin on Pembina River by Matthew Skopyk).
